Vonda and I spent 3 years removing the perhaps a quarter-acre of sod from our lawn to plant a garden full of native Wisconsin prairie plants. It was incredibly tedious and seemingly endless work involving vigilant removal of weeds and plants that didn’t belong there. Eventually, the prairie plants came to dominate the weeds and now provide us with an incredible flower and grass show that changes seasonally. Now the prairie is a real joy and the journey and work was worth it, and I have always wanted to capture the beauty there. This painting comes close, I think.
This painting is important to me in another way, too. As you can see on my web site, there is a sort of split style in my work. One is more about landscapes, the other is a more contemporary rendition of trees. My desire has been to create a work that captures both of these divergent styles in a coherent whole. I believe this piece is a demonstration of that coherence. I am very pleased with the outcome.
state of the studio
I have some pretty exciting news is that my work is featured in Artful Home retail catalogs this year! Artists can’t ‘buy their way into the catalog, which makes this is a fairly big deal because so few artists work are featured relative to the number of artists on Artfulhome.com. Sales have been moving quite well through Artful Home’s web site, in part, no doubt, to the catalog feature.

One other item I’d like to trumpet is some published work that will be used in the Norwegian National Winter Chamber Music Festival in spring of 2009. The Blue Trees series was selected for use on web pages, program and poster.
beware!
In an effort to save some cash on dog grooming bills, I attempted to groom our Airdale, Charlie. Big mistake! I hacked his head hair terribly and because I didn’t buy the most expensive clipper, could not even get through his body fur… The result was a pinhead and puffy body. Apparently art skills don’t translate to clipping dogs!
why i paint
“Once something is sketched, it belongs to me and I lovingly arrange it on my painting surface where it is reborn.”
I create paintings about emotional space, shape, color and pattern. With a painterly style, I carefully build up impasto layers, using wet into wet oil paint, and allowing shards of underpainting to show through. Formally, the pieces are about composition, color harmonies, shape, and texture, yet each piece reveals a sensory connection to the landscape around me, and a dynamic interplay between conscious and subconscious thought.
